Power Washing Pavers and Patio Restoration in Avon, OH

Pavers do not hold together because they are heavy. They hold together because sand packed into the joints locks them against each other. Lose that sand, to years of rain or to a pressure washer used too aggressively, and the pavers start moving independently. That is when a patio goes uneven, weeds find the gaps, and ants move into them.

The Difference

Why homeowners choose PowerClean Pros for patio restoration

Polymeric sand, not plain sand

Polymeric sand sets once activated, so it stays in the joint rather than washing out with the next heavy rain.

The joints are the actual repair

Cleaning a paver patio without re-sanding leaves the reason it is shifting untouched. This is the service that addresses it.

Pressure matched to the surface

Stone and pavers each take their own setting. Running one pressure across everything is how joints get stripped and stone gets etched.

The Detail

Why paver joints fail, and what fixes them

A paver patio is a system held together by what sits between the stones, not by the stones themselves. The sand packed into each joint wedges the pavers against one another and spreads load across the whole field, so the surface behaves like one piece. Lose that sand and each paver starts to move on its own. Rain washes ordinary joint sand out slowly over years, and a pressure washer run too hard strips it in an afternoon, which is how a routine cleaning turns into a repair.

Northern Ohio winters work on the joints as much as the rain does. Water sitting in an empty or low joint freezes, expands, and lifts the edges of the pavers, and the next thaw drops them back slightly out of line. Repeat that a few dozen times across one winter and the field goes uneven underfoot. Polymeric sand answers this because it is more than sand: it carries a binder that sets once it is watered in, so it locks into the joint and resists both the rain and the freeze cycle far longer than plain sand does. Full, set joints also close the gap that weeds and ants rely on, and sealing the surface afterward holds the sand in place while slowing how fast the color washes out of the pavers under sun and weather.

Worth Knowing

Sealing, drainage and knowing when to reset

A paver seal is not paint. It soaks in and binds the top of the joint sand while letting the base breathe, which matters in this climate because a patio that cannot release moisture from below will cloud as that moisture gets trapped under the surface. The sealer also deepens the paver color and makes spills easier to rinse, but its working job is holding the sand and slowing the fade the sun causes. Drainage is worth a look at the same time, since a patio that has settled toward the house sends water where it should not go, and no amount of sealing corrects a slope. Pavers that only need their joints refilled are a restoration; ones that have heaved badly over a failed base need lifting and relaying first, and that gets flagged honestly before any work is quoted.

Watch For These

Signs you need patio restoration

  • Joints that are visibly empty or well below the paver surface
  • Pavers rocking or sitting proud of their neighbors
  • Weeds and grass growing steadily up through the joints
  • Ant hills pushing sand up between the pavers
  • Green or black film spreading across the shaded half of the patio

Patio Restoration by PowerClean Pros

Our Process

The PowerClean Pros patio restoration process

  1. 01

    Clear the patio

Furniture, planters and grills come off so nothing is cleaned around.

  2. 02

    Deep clean

The paver faces and the joints are cleaned out, which is more involved than a surface wash.

  3. 03

    Re-Sand the joints

Polymeric sand is swept in, worked down until the joints are full, then activated so it binds and stays.

  4. 04

    Seal and reset

The surface is sealed once the joints have set, and everything goes back where it was.

Where We Run From

Based in Avon Lake, covering Cleveland's West Side

We work out of Avon Lake, on the Lake Erie shoreline about 17 miles west of Cleveland, as a service-area business with no showroom to visit. From there we cover the west-side suburbs along the I-90 corridor and range south through Strongsville to Brunswick in Medina County. The five towns we prioritize, Avon, Avon Lake, Strongsville, Westlake and Brunswick, each have their own page with local conditions and routes.

Good to Know

Patio restoration: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cleaning a patio and restoring it in northern Ohio?

Cleaning takes the growth and film off the surface. Restoration rebuilds the joints with polymeric sand, which is what actually stops the pavers shifting.

Will pressure washing damage the pavers on my Cleveland west side patio?

Too much pressure will, by blasting the sand out of the joints. Once that sand is gone the pavers shift. We clean pavers at a pressure that leaves the joints intact.

Why polymeric sand instead of regular sand on a northern Ohio patio?

Regular sand washes back out. Polymeric sand sets after it is activated and stays in the joint.

Will patio restoration stop the weeds on a northern Ohio patio?

Full, set joints remove the gap the weeds are growing in, so it makes a large difference.

Can pavers that have already shifted be fixed on a northern Ohio patio?

Re-sanding stops further movement. Pavers that have settled badly may need lifting and re-laying first, and we would flag that when we look at it.
